It’s quite relaxing at work last week because I only worked for 3 days on-site and another 2 offsite. Finally, I can get back to my office after 3 weeks and the feeling was good, and the only not-so-good thing was my CRT monitor which kinda hurt my eyes and I was PC-less on the first half of the first day. And if you are thinking that I was having fun at the office all day long, no, you were wrong because there were a lot of ‘Why’ and ‘How’ questions thrown at me whenever something funny shows up in the system.
Watched Invisible Target and surprisingly it’s better than expected. It’s a typical action-comedy Hong Kong movie which has a good storyline to give them reasons to fight. And if you are disappointed with Hong Kong movies these few years, maybe this one may help.
Went to PC fair on Sunday too and it’s so damn crowded but I think this one is better than the one held at PWTC a few years back. The hall is a lot bigger this time and other than gadgets, the gals are cuter too. I’ve finally bought my DVD-writer which I had thought of buying last year and I bought it from a guy! So, it proved that I’m rationale and pretty gals don’t work on me because I will still go for the best bargain. But honestly, my decision was partly based on the crowd which kept on growing and growing
Installing my DVD-writer was an easy experience but I had a shock of my life when my machine started without any response after that. I thought it was the Ram because I accidentally gave it a light brush before that but after tightening everything, it still won’t work. So could it be those IDE cables which I had switched for my new writer? NO! it is not because the same blank result was shown even though I unplug all IDE cables for my Roms. So the next reason that I can think of was the harddisk, but I didn’t even touch the harddisk at all before that!
So I tightened my SATA cable, fire it up and whoala, it works! But the problem was only half-solved because everything was so slow and booting up Windows took 10 minutes. So could it be that my 7200RPM harddisk was just only doing a merely 100RPM? And I was thinking of doing a backup of all my important data in my harddisk before it finally stopped spinning but with a hundred of RPM to transfer around 80 Gigs of data will take, days? So I did what a typical Windows user will do whenever things go wrong, restart the computer and pray.
Ok after a few times of booting, the same old slow Window startup screen showed up. And before I decided to give up and prepare my external harddisk to do a backup which will probably take days, I checked the BIOS to assure that my harddisk was shown there. I switched all my BIOS settings back to defaults and gave it a last try and you know what? I can feel the speed of 7200RPM coming back! My harddisk was resurrected and it’s back to normal!
I told my friends this morning and here are some informal technical advices. SATA harddisk is superbly sensitive especially on the power cord. And there are even special clips which are meant to ensure that the harddisk gets continuous uninterrupted power supply. Unplug and reset all your settings to default whenever something weird happens to clear the BIOS cache from keeping and running the same configurations.
And here I am, with my machine working in optimum performance again. I’m wondering how dreadful by life will be if my harddisk really died just like that. All my Movies, MP3s, Documents, Photos, and everything M related will be gone just like that. Think I really need to spend some time to do some serious backups, especially those M related stuffs hehe…
