Movies which successfully grossed a lot of money will usually end up being remade, like for instance Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Miami Vice and etc because people believe that good quality stuffs get better when they keep on doing and redoing it. But a more popular way to deal with well earned movies nowadays is to plan for its sequel and if a sequel is impossible due to the limitation of the storyline, a prequel will do.
2007 is a year where quite a number of popular sequels hit the cinema and doing a successful sequel is actually not an easy task because a new story which enables the old story to proceed and cheat convince the audiences is not easy to write. If you do not agree with what I said, let me try to write synopses for several sequels which will soon be available this year and you be the judge:
Spiderman 3 (4th May 2007)
Although Peter Parker has finally got together with Mary Jane but peaceful days will not last long for superheroes as Peter is threaten once again by the green-horrible-flying goblin and himself, the Venom (the dark side of himself)! As spiderman, Peter fights the green-horrible-flying-goblin in the day and as Venom, he makes friend with the same green-horrible-flying-goblin at night. Being a confused superhero who doesn’t even know whether if he is the good or the bad guy, Peter in the same time has puzzled the green-horrible-flying-goblin and leads him to depression. The green-horrible-flying-goblin finally gives up Peter because he couldn’t stand his mood swing and leave the city of New York and never return
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (13th July 2007)
Harry Potter and his friends were kicked out from the magic school because they have been naughty and keep on creating troubles and hassles for the past 4 episodes. The lonely and sad Harry wonders around town aimlessly one day because he has too much time and found a ring in his pocket. The journey begins when Harry found out that the ring holds ultimate power which is impossible to control and too great for anyone in the world to possess. So he sets a quest to destroy the ring with his friends. Yawn
Shrek 3 (18th May 2007)
On the first episode, both Shrek and Princess Fiona got together and on the second episode, it talks about how they got married and deal with their in-laws. Now on the third episode, Shrek and Fiona have a son called Prince Chrek but later, they divorced each other after Fiona finds out that Shrek is having an affair with Princess Piona from another country. The story heats up when Shrek on another hand realize that Princess Fiona actually has a daughter secretly a long time ago and that happens to be Princess Piona, her to soon-to-be-new wife! Unable to accept the truth, Shrek shares his grief with his son (Prince Chrek) but surprisingly, Chrek in the same time falls in love with Princess Piona, his own sister! Since this is the final installment, so there is no happily ever after anymore
Ocean’s 13 (8th June 2007)
Ocean 11 talks about how they came out with the perfect plan to rob the Casino while Ocean 12, talks crap (I don’t know why they still proceed with Ocean 13 since Ocean 12 sucks). But in Ocean 13, these geniuses who always come out with perfect plans for robbery were so boring since there is nothing much left to rob. So they plan to rob each other and the person who manage to rob the most, wins the game
Goal 2 (3rd February 2007)
On the first episode, Santiago Munez gained his football experience and fame in Newcastle United. But in this sequel, Santiago finds out that he actually has lots of talent in basketball too. So Santiago has to make the biggest decision in his life on whether to play football or basketball but in the end, he ended up playing table tennis in China
National Treasure 2 (21st December 2007)
Nicholas Cage (the main actor) found the treasure in the first episode and in this second episode, he found out that all the treasures he owns are fake duplicates! So he is facing lawsuits from the government on piracy issues and to get out of his troubles and bankruptcy, he needs to find another treasure to settle all his court fees before it’s too late
Alien vs Predator (21st December 2007)
On the first episode, the great battle between the Aliens and Predators has ended. But somehow, one of the surviving predators found out that what happens in the first episode was not true at all! It was just a matrix-style simulation created by humans to confuse both the aliens and predators so that they will fight each other. The surviving predator (the chosen one) bears with the quest to enlighten and free all other predators and aliens mind and tell them about the real truth so that they can join forces and declare war with humans.
Bean 2 (23th March 2007)
You might think that this is just like any other ordinary Mr Bean movie but this is not! Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) has a major breakthrough in this film where he doesn’t want to do stupid comedy anymore. The story begins when a rocket scientist was murdered in NASA and since then, no one else could understand the dead scientist’s genius work which can change the course of mankind. Mr Bean who has spent 5 years in Harvard to study quantum physics found out that he could actually understand the dead scientist work and even unravel a conspiracy which is too great for humanity to accept.
